Our inspiration for the LifePump came from the number of deaths occurring due to the lack of clean water. According to UNICEF lack of clean water claims the death of about 1.5 million children each year. This is shocking statistic considering that adults are not included into this fact. Another driver for creating the LifePump was the lack of water sources in developing countries. In third world countries women and young children are the ones who have to travel in search of drinking water. When they do find sources of water it is not always clean drinking water. Sources estimate that that women and children travel about 10 to 15 km in order to get water. Women and children have to sacrifice their education and leisure time in search for water.
The LifePump is way to provide clean water communities in an easy way. It combines the filtration system used in the LifeStraw to create a more dynamic and easy way of getting water. There is a tube provided at each end of the filter casing in which water flows. The water is pumped using a foot pump that is shared among a community. The water can be pumped from any source i.e. puddles of acid precipitation. One end of the tube is put into the dirty water and the other into a container. When the water is pumped it enters the filter and goes into the container. This happens due the pressure of the water when it enters into the tube.
